Naked Silhouette Alphabet.

“The photographic series NAKED SILHOUETTE ALPHABET is a latin alphabet art, formed by the naked body and performance of experimental textures that depict the silhouette.” says the creator Anastasia Mastrakouli.

In this series the goal is to highlight the dialectical relationship between anatomy and visual arts. Each image displays the way in which the body turns into one illustrative and choreographic communication channel of a message. The body is cut off from its physical nature and is perceived as an imprint. The body shape becomes a letter through a deliberately abstract and other-worldly aesthetic.

Once all the pieces were made to construct the dress I pressed and cut them out neatly, I then had to think about how I wanted to construct the dress. I wanted the dress to be constructed in the same way that an actual dress would be made, just like it would be if it were made from fabric. For this I have decided to attach all the pieces together using a sewing machine but the dress with is presented inside out as I will not be able to manipulate it like a normal dress.

Let the construction of my dress commence.

Making my dress………

I have started to make the dress and I have decide to cut out the pattern pieces that I need and make paper that is the pattern piece size, so that there isn’t any seams where there wouldn’t usually be. This requires me to press paper together when its wet as my screen isn’t large enough to make it with one go.

I have decided to use a Butterick pattern no3705. The pattern that I have picked was printed in Australia, and is a size 12. Its described as ‘High Waisted, semi-fitted dress with away-from-the-neck collar, front tab detail, button trim’ I have decided to create a sleeveless version as most of the dresses that my grandmother created and in the photographs that I have seem to be sleeveless.

Thoughts, Ideas, Notes, Plans………….

So I have been experimenting with paper and its properties and I need to start to think of something this I would like to construct from it. I have been thinking and I still like the ide that the piece will relate to me and I want it to show how textiles reflect there time, so I have decided I want to make a dress that would have been worn but my Grandmother when she was my age (24). I have been searching her house for a pattern that she used as I feel that that connection is vitally important to make the project flow. She has quite a few patterns she has kept from years ago and allot of them are from Australia what is where she was living when she was my age. The patterns vary in style and make but quite a few of them are the make BUTTERICK. I need to pick one!! I need to look at the patterns and see what I would be able to achieve using paper as it wont have the strength or properties of fabric. I think the best chance that I have for getting the dress to as close to the style that is intended for the pattern is to make the garment inside out, enabling me to construct it fully? I have also been thinking about how clothes get worn over and over again and a piece wont be the same, it will change every time you wear it, becoming weaker as time goes by. Old Kid Gloves are a really good example of this, there made from leather of unborn calves. Most genuine gloves could only be own once as the leather was so delicate the seams would not withstand being removed from you hands and being put back on. Delicate and one of a kind! It makes me think about other things like leather shoes, they will last you a long time but will never be the same as the first time you wear them. They develop and become individual; each owner with the same pair of shoes won’t end up with the same looking shoes after a period of wearing them. I want to do something with this thought, incorporating it within my dress and showing how things get worn.

Paper Making............

I have started to create my own paper using materials that are easily accessible to me and are ready available. I don’t what the paper to seem like a precious item I want it to seem every day. As of this I have decided to use newspapers to make my pulp of which is the main part of my paper. I have made my own screen what is A5 size and is perfect size for experimentation. I have made several pieces and experimented with different ways of drying the paper.

I have found that when you dry the paper naturally its softer, when I have forced the drying period by pinning to a radiator or using a hair dryer it becomes very ridged and wavy. So natural drying is the best way for the look that I want to achieve. I have also looked into pitting things within the paper though strengthen it such as thread but I feel that it takes away from the natural look. The experimentations that I have produce using lace to make a embossed effect on the material haven’t worked I don’t know why I haven’t been able to do this bit I am beginning to like the paper raw, just as it dry’s it creates its own texture. It has a depth to it; just like fabric has a weave the paper has its own pattern. I will continue to try and perfect my technique and try and make larger pieces so I will have more of a choice of what to do with them. I have cast a few things with paper too, taking the wet piece and leaving it to dry upon it so it adapts the shape, these have worked quite well and are delicate little items.
